Choosing Sun Safe Candy for Picnics and Parties
It can be great fun to host a social event - whether you have just a few guests or a hundred people. Of course, you can invite these people over to your home for a meal and some mingling. If the guest list is large enough, you can arrange to hold the festivities at a church, hall, or banquet room.
As much fun as these indoor occasions can be, there's just something special about hosting a party or a picnic outdoors. After all, there's a lot more room for families to spread out and children to run around and play. Everyone gets to enjoy the fresh air, especially if much of their life is spent being cooped up in an office building or school. Perhaps most importantly, a social gathering that takes place under the bright sun and the blue sky is practically guaranteed to make memories - especially if people bring their cameras along!
But if you do choose to entertain outside, you'll certainly have to take some precautions that you wouldn't have to worry about in an indoor setting. If the sun is especially bright, you should provide sunscreen and shady areas for your guests. It is probably necessary to have a decent supply of insect spray nearby so you can get rid of mosquitoes, ants, or flies (which tend to crash picnics frequently). Finally, it's a good idea to provide ample trash receptacles and recycling containers to simplify cleanup for everyone and keep your party or picnic spot spotless.
What types of outdoor gatherings do you enjoy? Do you love to lounge by the pool and take a dip in the cool waters to escape the sun's heat? What about parties with plenty of activities like horseshoes, badminton, bocce, or even team sports? Maybe you prefer the classic afternoon picnic at a park, lake, or beach with several (or dozens?) of your closest friends and family members.
No matter what form your open-air event takes, there's one thing that can make it that much better: candy!
But you can't just pick up any type of candy. The sweets that are best suited for picnics or outdoor parties are the ones that are "sun safe" - in other words, the heat of the sunshine won't affect them. If your candy choices are not sun safe, you kind wind up with a huge mess made up of chocolate stains and fruity-hued color splotches on clothing and furniture.
So if you need ideas for candy selections for your next event that will be held outside, here are some suggestions for sun safe sweets:
Licorice
The chewy, flavorful treats maintain their shape no matter what the temperature may be outdoors. You can even provide a variety of licorice choices, such as red or black mix, Australian red whips, or red Scotties. Perhaps best of all, almost all licorice is fat-free!
Rock candy
Since it is crystalline in form, rock candy won't melt or rub off if the sun is on it. It's especially tasty at parties as after-meal treats so guests can "cleanse their pallets." Choose from flavors such as grape, cherry, raspberry, or strawberry.
Jolly Ranchers
Because each piece of hard candy is individually wrapped, the sun won't affect the taste or texture at all. They can be toted around anywhere and remain in perfect condition until they're ready to be eaten. Jolly Ranchers come in apple, watermelon, blue raspberry, cherry, and grape flavors.
Very cherry candies
From Jelly Bellies to buttons to Double Bubble gumballs, cherry-flavored candies don't contain artificial coatings that can rub off on your fingers and clothes. So you don't have to concern yourself with stains or sticky fingers.
Gummies
It's hard to find a child who doesn't like to devour gummy bears. Parents love them because they're clean treats which usually aren't messy, even around kids. But you can get more types of shapes than just bears - like Swedish fish, worms, alligators, frogs, cola bottles, letters, octopi, lobsters, snakes, dinosaurs, and killer sharks.
If you are planning on playing host to a birthday party, class picnic, or other event where children will be in abundance, you may be better off buying your candy in bulk. That way, you won't have to mess with opening bags and cleaning up litter. Plus, you're guaranteed to have enough candy on hand without running out! You can even purchase bulk candy online and have it shipped right to your door - so you don't have to make a special trip to the supermarket, drugstore, or sweet shop.
Whenever you choose to socialize under the sun, you have to make a few preparations. You must apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and stay hydrated. You should also make sure that your candy is sun safe so everyone can satisfy their sweet tooth without succumbing to clothing stains or sticky hands. The good news? There is plenty of sun safe candy options to choose from - so pick up some for your next picnic or party!

Throwing a Frog Themed Birthday Party
Are you throwing a Frog Themed Birthday Party for your child? Themed parties are very popular nowadays, and they're often simple to pull off if you have a little creativity and do a tiny bit of homework. As we know little boys are made of frogs, snails, and puppy dog tails, such a theme will be right up your little tadpole's alley! Choosing the right decorations and frog themed favors will make his party a smash hit with the rest of the neighborhood. Here are some great ideas for frog themed birthday parties:
Green and Blue - These are the colors to go with when planning your frog themed birthday party. Streamers and decorations should reflect the blue waters of a frog's pond, and the green of the frog and surrounding lily pads. Search for frog themed birthday banners. Checking the internet for frog images will turn up thousands of results - and don't just limit yourself to the green ones. Many exotic African tree frogs come in reds and yellows and even blues! In this digital age most moms people have color printing options available to them, either at home or by uploading the images to online sites for processing. Print a few glossy 8x10's of these images to hang around the party room, and watch the little ones oogle all the different varieties and colors.
Frog Party Invitations - Again, the web is an unlimited source of great frog images. Frog themed birthday party invitations can easily be made up to look like fliers, listing the party's date and time in the middle. Cover your invite with beautiful frogs, flies, and lilies. Send them out in green envelopes. Grab a simple roll of frog stickers from a stationary store or cheap online auction, and plaster them on the envelopes and fliers. If you check your local post office, you can even find frog stamps!
Frog Themed Arts and Crafts - Your choices are limitless here. One great idea would be to have each party goer create his or her own frog mask. Use heavy gauge green construction paper or purchase plastic visors from a craft or dollar store. Buy a pack of those big googly eyes, and some pre-cut rounded pieces of foam to go behind them. Create some pre-cut black paper 'spots' and then have each child create their own red frog tongue. A couple of glue sticks later, and everyone has a simple, fun, easy-to-make frog mask... and you have no mess or cleanup! The possibilities are endless, but always think simple. You're going to be running a party full of kids, and you want things to flow smoothly.
Frog Themed Birthday Games - You can put a frog themed spin on just about any birthday game there is! How about pin the tongue on the frog? Using a poster board and some green paint, design a large frog with an open mouth. Cut some tongue shapes from red or pink construction paper and place each child's name on the tongues. Then play it exactly like pin the tail on the donkey, blindfold and all - with the winner being the child who places the frog's tongue closest to the center of the mouth. Another idea would be Leapfrog Musical Lily Pads. Create some lily pads out of old green mats or sheets of foam. Play music and have the children frog-hop around 'the pond' in circles... when the music stops, everyone must find a pad to sit on or they're eliminated - just like musical chairs. Then there's the Frog Bean Bag Toss. Have kids toss green frog-themed bean bags onto pre-cut lily pads, each marked with different amounts of point. Make small pads are worth higher points, and the child with the highest total becomes the winner. With a little creativity, you always can create your own game. Leap Frog Relay Race... Frog Bingo (using 'flies' instead of chips!)... Frog-Frog-Tadpole instead of duck-duck-goose... there's no limit!
Frog Themed Birthday Cake - Most bakeries should have no trouble making your child a fantastic frog cake. If however, you'd like to make your own, there are frog-shaped cake pans available on the internet. Using green and white icing, you can decorate it any way you like. Find some low-cost frog figurines from a craft or dollar store, and use them to decorate. For an even more unique idea, find a bakery that will provide 'frog cakes' - one for each child. These are a fondant dessert in the shape of a frog's head, a sponge base topped in cream and then dipped in green chocolate. A 'mouth' is cut in the top of each cake and then a pair of eyes are added using black sprinkles or toppings. Very cute! Even if you choose this, be sure to get a small cake so everyone can still sing happy birthday.
Frog Birthday Party Bags - Once again, the dollar store is your friend. Any amount of low-cost frog themed toys and favors can be found at your nearest craft store. Find white lunch bags and have your child pre-color them green before the party, writing each child's name on the bags as well. You get unique favor bags AND your child gets to do something fun for his own party to boot! Stretchy frogs, green bouncy balls, plastic frog and fly figurines - then fill the bags with some frog themed candy, like green and brown M&M's or gummy insects. You can even bake some frog cookies beforehand, if you're feeling ambitious enough.
With only a minimal amount of work, your child's frog themed birthday party can be something remembered for a long time to come! It's almost guaranteed that the little boys and girls will rush home to their parents with their own themed parties in mind... so be ready to answer questions and offer advice!
